Stephani kissed me over and over again. She explained that Edmund would be coming the next day and they had made big preparations to bring thousands of flowers.

Meanwhile Otto was rushing about in a blue silk kimono making coffee. Stephani laughed as he told her he thought I was a Norwegian model and having placed a notice on the tree ‘No Models’ he had waved me away. He came forward with the coffee and said, “Wa ist nicht Ze Zoren?’

“I am not laughing at her, “ Stefani said, “but at you - you thinking she was a model.”

“I thought she was Norwegian,” he replied, “she has that Scandinavian look”

Then he hurried off and left us drinking coffee and eating little horseshoe cones which tasted delicious. He returned dressed to go out and said, ‘I go quickly to my Atalier to bring cushions. The maichen ist kommen.”

We had so much to say - Steffy and myself - an hour passed and we were still in deep in conversation when Otto returned carrying a huge feather bed on his back covered in crimson satin  

and huge great feathered pillows under his arms.

“So.” he said smiling, “I pass through the Rue Saint Honore with these on my back.”

We simply roared with laughter.

I felt very much at home. The room we sat in opened out onto an immense studio and the curtains were drawn back so I could see easels and palettes and plaster casts and a draped stage affair for a model. It was just what I had always wanted - to live and be with real artists.

My friend rose saying, “Now you must rest - you look tired.”

We went up a few stairs into a low pitched room which gave out onto a verandah. The sun was pouring in. It was Spring - the most beautiful time of the year to behold this wonderful city.

Otto Hettner brought up the great pillows and the feather mattress . He spread them out over a settee bed, said, “so,” and disappeared.

I slept solid two hours and woke to find myself in Paris
