A Biography of James Augustus St.John

According to the ratebooks in the Chiswick archives, James Augustus St john rented the cottage from Mrs Frolish from 1840 and the last date is 1843. There are two entrances to the cottage and it is likely he rented the larger part - the left side of the cottage The local historian traced the cottage and, amazingly, it is still there. It is a wonderful seventeenth century cottage. One historian spoke of the area then as 'Dickens with a bit of Trollope thrown in a nd it is all in that cottage. The whole family lived there so it must have been a bit cramped.

The cottages are now called 'Arlington Park Cottages' and are just off Turnham Green (on Chiswick High Street) in the road called Sutton Lane North. The cottages are hidden away and there is a large tree in the front garden. I will have to return and photograph the area but it is now rather developed. In the 1840's the whole Chiswick area only had a population of about four thousand.
