A Biography of James Augustus St.John
The Final Years
In 1862, James Augustus St.John moved to No 28 Grove End Road and one year later he moved to no 25. No 25 and 28 were smaller houses on the same side of the road as no 13. These houses were between Hall road and Garden Road.
Sherlock Holmes had been another resident who lived close to Regent’s Park. He lived in Baker Street and one could do with his help to trace J.A.St John’s missing years. Where did he live until his final years in St John’s Wood Terrace?’ This road leads into Primrose Hill above Regent’s Park.
St John's Wood Terrace was rather down market. In the 1860's a plasterer called Mr Roberts lived at no 11 while Mr Mundy, a gas inspector, lived at no 28. There are almshouses in the road, but J.A St John moved to 44 St John’s Terrace in 1873[1].
S.V,Silsbury ends her entry in the ‘Dictionary of National Biography" with a reference to the terrace: "He amassed no fortune from his considerable literary labours and died in relative poverty at 44 St John's Wood Terrace, London, on 22 September 1875, two days before his eightieth birthday; he was buried in Highgate cemetery.”
