Thomas Dommett Paul, died at the age of 43,in 1877. His eldest son,Edward Thomas, was only 18,and was not able to manage the farm, Harvard Farm at Halstock, over 400 acres, owned by the Earl of Ilchester.The farm is shown as being managed, in 1841 and 1851 by Samuel Paul, father ofElizabeth, Thomas' wife.. The ages in 1841 are a muddle, but in 1851, Samuel was 58, his wife, Alice, 60, with children Samuel. 24, Joseph 21, Elizabeth appears on the 1841 only, aged 12,ie b. ca1839. The 1861 census reveals that Thomas D. Paul was the farmer in partnership with Alice, his mother in law.In 1871,Elizabeth Mary was the farmer ( Thomas is missing)- Alice would have been 80. the family obviously ran into difficulties and by 1881, Elizabeth M. was a draper in Reading 50, with her children,Edward J.24,Ethel M.,12, Marion A., 14, and also Alice.,57, dau of Samuel, Elizabeth's sister. The family had experienced hard times, and Elizabeth was unable to keep up the farm. However, they had organised jobs for their older boys. The children of Thomas D.
