SourceOn August 17th, 1860, when he was just 15, he was appointed Midshipman,at £1.50 per month. On May 1, 1861, he became first Clerk in the Treasury in Sarawak. On June 18, 1862, he was confirmed by the Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak at St Thomas’ Church. In January 1864, he became the first Postmaster in Sarawak. He was subsequently appointed to various other posts, in Bintulu and Paku, including Resident-in-charge of Upper Sarawak, the first Clerk to the Supreme Council, chaired by Rajah Brooke, and Coroner.
On November 4, 1871,Oliver Cromwell married his cousin, Blanche Sarah Hansard, at St Thomas’ Church, the bishop officiating, his uncle James Augustus II being a witness. In a list of officials and their addresses, their house is named as Montacute, after the Somerset village where his father -in-law ( and uncle ), Frederick Agar Hansard, lived. He suffered a bout of illness, which resulted in his being on half-pay for 18 months, before he retired to Mexico in 1884. He returned to England, at least briefly, and was present when his mother died, in 1895: he died Jun 13, 1898.
