SourceFrom the DNB On 29 April 1899, St John married Mary Augusta, daughter of Frederick Macnaghten Armstrong, lieutenant-colonel in the Indian army. She survived him. He had also continued to support Dayang Kamariah and his surviving son, Sulong, who had trained in England as a civil engineer. An ambitious, intelligent, but humourless man, St John died at his home, Pinewood Grange, Camberley, on 2 January 1910. He bequeathed his portrait of Brooke by Sir Francis Grant (circa 1847) to the National Portrait Gallery.
