Though we have no evidence of his birth. he married Jydia Roberts on May 25, 1788. Burton Bradstock, and died,Sep Q.,1840, Bridport Dorset. I have evidence of three children: John Swain,b. 1791, Bradpole, bapt. Jul, 1823 (Axminster records).died Sep Q.,1864,aged 73 at Bridport,Richard Swain, chr. May 3, 1795 and Mary Lydia Swain, chr.Aug 21, 1813,both at Burton Bradstock.

Joseph Swain was born about the beginning of 1764, as he died,Jun 21,1840, a mariner, aged 76, in Bridport. It is assumed that he was the eldest child. He married Lydia Roberts, May 25, 1788, Burton Bradstock. Lydia was bapt. Jun 11,1764, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Roberts,née Runyard, who were married Nov 3,1759, by licence, Dorchester. Joseph and Lydia had several children, of whom the eldest was John Swain, Harbourmaster at Bridport, who married Jane Hooke, his first cousin, Dec 15, 1817, Lyme Regis. Ten children have been found, all but one in the Axminster Wesleyan Records: all reached adulthood. There was a son, John Swain, a Master Mariner, born Jul 21, 1825, continuing the family tradition.

Here is evidence (death Certificate) that Joseph died at 1 p.m. Jun 21, 1840, Burton Bradstock, aged 76, a mariner, but registered Jul 1, 1840, so it appears in Sep Q., in Free BMD. This ties nicely with his being born about the beginning of 1764, as his mother and father were married in January 1763. His son John married the daughter of William Hooke and Mary, née Swain. This means that the birth of a Joseph in 1756 does not hold water, and was the main reason for my looking elsewhere which led to Martha's will of 1818
