Genealogy

John Swain was the Harbour Master at Bridport: he married Jane Hooke, Dec 15, 1817, in Lyme, both being of the Parish. M. Swaine was a witness.Eight children were first traced, born between 1818 and 1832, all baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel, Axminster. The dates, but not the places, of birth, were also given. The eldest five were baptised on the same day,. Two further children,Hope and Ellen, were then traced, and they have now been found along with some of their siblings, in the 1841 Bridport census. Some confusion arose, because John’s name was spelt SWAINE (sic), on his marriage. but appears normally. as John SWAIN of Bridport, on the birth of Hope, with the mother’s name Jane, daughter of William and Mary Hooke. In 1851, John and Jane, born Lyme Regis, ca 1797, were at Bridport with their youngest daughter, Ellen. In 1861, John, 70, still Harbour Master at Bridport, and Jane, 64, had their daughter Emma Jane, 28, with them. Jane died Sep Q. 1872, aged 76. John died, Sept Q. 1864, aged 73, at Bridport The children so far found, are as follows:
