The underlying database is MYSQL and as such can be queried directly using SQL. However Mediawiki hides this quite effectively, and queries are done through the Mediawiki language. One extension to this language, Dynamic Page List provides a powerful query feature that underlies much of the formal structure of this site, especially Marriages.

Mediawiki has an export to XML feature which is extensively used. All the pages in the main namespace are exported to XML and then read in by a Perl program to produce the Index and the Family Tree.
