Help:Fields

Notes on templates: in Mediawiki parlance, templates are like computer programs, and rather inscrutable ones at that. One uses a so-called template by referencing it with two curly brackets followed by its name, for example {{Person. This is followed by a list of fields, each of which is prefixed by a "|" and assigned a value, for example |name=Jane Smith. The Template expansion is ended by a pair of closing curly brackets. There are example below; if you should ever be faced with a sea of curly, round, and square brackets, you have probably blundered into an actual Template (Mediawiki program) and you should immediately cancel or go "back".

Your best bet with any of these is to look at an existing page that uses the fields of the template in question. New pages in the (default) name space will automatically include a blank instance of the fields defined by the Person template.

Web Pages are particularly complicated, and it is best to copy-and-paste from an existing page. Very large web pages cause the server to run out of memory, and a different technique is used there. Please see Web:NEM-Notebook-Twenty_Three for an example of the use of the Web Page header, center, and footer templates; these are the Template:WebPage simply broken into 3 separate pieces and use the same fields.

See Help:Dates for a list of all acceptable date formats.

[edit] Fields in the Person template

[edit] Fields

private= to make the page private, add your username here (e.g., private=frank)
prefix= Mr., Ms., Mrs., Miss, Mme., Lady, Sir, Gen. Prof., Dr., etc...
gender= M or F or m or f or male , etc. used by Help:Unknown Parents, so this should be set
caption= Text to put under the person's picture.
forename= You must supply a first name here.
middlenames= Optional, should be part of the page name if available
lastname= Married name should go here. Use the name which is most relevant, or for which the person is most likely to be searched.
nickname= This can be a full name - use this as an additional search term. It will be rendered inside () as part of the page title.
suffix= I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X used to disambiguate generations with identical names
father= Please try to avoid trailing spaces. This will be shown in red if the father doesn't exist, blue if he does.
father_ext= The http address (URL) of an external family tree site. See Help:External Pages
mother= Use Maiden name here. Same colors apply as to the father.
mother_ext= The http address of an external family tree site. See Help:External Pages
born=? Preferred format is yyyy-mm-dd but "19 Feb 1657/8" or "circa 1732" or "Q Jun 1809" are all OK (no quotes required). Please don't enter an approximate date here if the baptism date is known exactly. Please remove the "?" if nothing is known about the birth, but the baptism information is available.
bapt= Same format as above. Both born and bapt will be included in the chronology if they are real dates (as apposed to "?").
birth_country= Should be a real country
birth_city= The birth city + country will be hyperlinked to their Wikipedia pages. The entry is split at commas, and each result is made into a separate link.
died=? If this is blank, no birth or death information will be rendered at all. If unknown, leave as "?", otherwise use the same format as born.
died_country= Must be a real country. The death and birth locations will also be hyperlinked to Wikipedia
died_city= E.g., London, parsed for commas just like birth_city.
interred_date= This is intended as an alternative to the date of death when it is known exactly but the date of death isn't.
interred_country= Also hyperlinked, e.g., England
interred_city= Not sure if the city should also be in the cemetery name. These fields are also parsed for commas.
interred_cemetery= Fill this in if buried -or-
interred_crematorium= fill this in if cremated
education= Free form field. You can reference Wikipedia by using this syntax: [[wp:New York University|New York University]] to get New York University, for example.
website= Just put in the URL, for example, |website=http://www.apogeect.com Apogeect will render as Website: Apogeect. If the web site is internal, the syntax is a bit more complicated. For example |website=[Web:CS_Count_Safroni{{!}}Count Safroni] will be rendered as Website: Count Safroni
email= Just enter your email address, for example f.middleton@apogeect.com will render as f.middleton@apogeect.com
location= This field is for where the person lived.. Parsed for commas. A putative GEDCOM generator would automatically insert the quotes (i.e., "Country" "City") so don't use them!
jobs= This field is for what the person did.. Free form field like |education.
work= This field is for where the person worked. See above for Gedcom notes. Parsed for commas.

[edit] Example

   See any page about a person, for example, George Agar Hansard, which shows several of these templates in use

[edit] Fields in the Marriage template

[edit] Fields

spouse= Must be Maiden name. Normally left blank for wives - the software will find their spouse and fill in the fields automatically. Will be red if the spouse's page is not yet defined, blue if the spouse page exists.
country= E.g., England
city= E.g., London. Will be parsed for commas.
mdate= Preferred format is yyyy-mm-dd but "19 Feb 1657/8" or "circa 1732" or "Jun Q 1809" are all OK. See Help:Dates for a complete list of the date formats that have been tested.

The marriage template should be left empty for spouses - the software will find a corresponding marriage entry and fill it in automatically.

[edit] Example

{{Marriages}}

body= text follows this

[edit] Example

{{Bio|title=Introduction|source=Michael Middleton|background=aliceblue|body=
