Charles served as a Rifleman in the 1st/21st battalion of the London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) Service Number 655816 he was killed in action on 31/8/1918 aged 22. He is remembered on the Vis-En- Artois Memorial Panel 10 which is situated in the cemetery of that name. The memorial commemorates United Kingdom and Commonwealth forces who have no known grave.
