Biography

Known as Count Safroni, Arnold Safroni Middleton was an publisher, explorer, writer,....

Amongst lots of other things he wrote 'Sailor and Beachcomber' and his grandson has written a biography of this unusual individual. This biography also exists in a narrative form 'A footnote to Stevenson'

'Middleton had three daughters and one son to feed. His first child was stillborn. Joan was born in 1913 Gabrielle in 1915, Hugh in 1919 and Mary in 1921. Often they lived close to poverty. Colby Road was a residence for a sailor-vagabond.'

(from 'A footnote to Stevenson'.)

Perhaps it was a memory of a stillborn child that was responsible for Middleton's poem 'The Dream."
