Death of a Wonderful Woman
MRS A. A. MIDDLETON DIES AT AGE OF 101.
Mrs Amy Ann Middleton, who lived for many years at Wolfington Road, West Norwood, was buried at Elmers End Cemetery on Saturday. She was within six months of her 102nd birthday. Mrs Middleton was the widow of the late Mr. Charles Sharpe Middleton, for some time editor of the Times of India, author and an authority on Shelley. She travelled extensively with her husband and spent some time in India. She was proud of her knowledge of Hindustani, and, to the last, would greet her friends in that tongue.
At her own request her coffin was one of the "old fashioned sort" with mauve velvet embossed with pansies of a deeper hue. Messrs j.B Wilson, of West Norwood, who directed the internment, state they have not had tov provide such a coffin for over forty years. Mrs Middleton"s family has a long literary history. She was descended from Haynes Bayley[1] who wrote the "Mistletoe Bough." The tradition is being maintained by her sons and nephews, who are engaged or have been successful as men of letters. Mr. A, Safroni Middleton, a son, published his latest work, on the day of her death. The book appears under the pen-name of Count Safroni, a maternal ancestor.
Amongst those present or represented at the funeral on Saturday, and who sent beautiful floral tributes, were: - Mr. A Safroni-Middleton (son) and Mrs. A.S.Middleton, Mr. Hugh Middleton, Mrs. Mellersh (daughter) and Mr. Mellersh, Mr. Walter Middleton (son) and Mrs. W. Middleton, Mr. C .S Middleton (son), Mr. Horace Middleton, Mr. and Mrs. Richardson (niece) Mr. and Mrs Finnis Watkins of Westerham, Mr. and Mrs. H. Watkins of Birmingham and Miss Watkins, Mr. and Mrs. P. Ward, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Watkins, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Gelder, Mr. G. Watkins, Mr. and Mrs. Little, Mrs. and Miss Hindmarsh, Miss Alice Lake, Miss Dolly Varden, Mr. and Mrs. Penrose and Miss Grace Penrose, Mrs Townley Gill, the Misses Ambrose, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice and Miss Irene Watkins.- ↑ Wikipedia: "Haynes Bayley (October 13, 1797 - April 22, 1839)". He would have had to have been her grandfather, which he wasn"t.
